November 27, 2008 - Although ‘Wet and Wild’ again would have been an apt headline for this year’s tournament, it was the University of Iowa men and the women from Wake Forest University who led from the opening round for even more descriptive ‘Wire-to-Wire” wins in the 2008 Landfall Tradition.
With first day winds gusting to 30 miles per hour and greens firmed up for the Tournament, only a third of the men players had broken 80 when the long round ended. Tough conditions did not seem to bother the Iowa men, however, as they roared to an amazing 22-shot first round lead over second place Tulsa. Led by medalist Vince India’s 68, which led one competitor to wonder “what course he had played”, the Hawkeyes had three players in the top four right from the start. It was a lead they would never relinquish, and at the end of a beautiful sunny Sunday, the Hawkeyes had won by 12 shots for Coach Mark Hankin’s first title as head coach. VCU’s Rafael Campos was low individual with a three day total of 217, beating out Vince India of Iowa and Danny Zimmerman of Wisconsin, both had 219.
Anyone may play in the Collegiate/ Amateur competition on Thursday afternoon and attend dinner that evening.
