18th Annual Landfall Tradition Results

The 2019 Landfall Tradition got off to a smashing start on Thursday with the always fun and well attended College-Amateur golf tournament that was followed by the Dinner of Champions that evening. Twenty-seven teams competed in the event which consisted of each team having four amateur players and one collegiate player. After play, all participants were treated to a delicious steak dinner and a chance at winning many great raffle prizes.

Day one saw perfect weather with sunny skies and light winds; way different that last year's first round that was delayed twice by rain and had to be completed on day two. Many teams got off to hot starts due to the ideal scoring conditions. Both Alabama and Illinois shared the first-round lead at 3 under par, four shots clear of South Carolina and Florida State.

Day two was much of the same for the weather as warm temps and dry conditions again provided some ideal scoring opportunities. Alabama played a brilliant second round with a team score of 10 under par. Illinois stumbled with a 8 over par second round with South Carolina improving their second round to shoot 3 under par. The great play by Alabama gave them an 11-shot lead over South Carolina heading into the final round.

In trying to break "tradition" of inclement weather during this event recently, Sunday's final round seemed destine to be a wet one as well as the early morning saw showers pass through prior to play. However, mother nature was finally on our side as the skies cleared and the final round was played rain free. Looking like it was Alabama's tournament to win, they got off to a slow start as South Carolina, the 2018 Team Runner-ups got off to a hot start. They quickly cut Bama's lead to just 3 shots within the first six holes. Alabama maintained that lead up until the last three holes were some untimely bogeys followed by timely birdies by South Carolina allowed the Gamecocks to take control of the tournament. Their final round of 5 under par enabled them to hold on at the end and enjoy a five-stroke victory.

Equally competitive as the Team title was the Individual title as ten competitors finished the tournament under par. Tunrada Piddon of Central Florida set the early pace with an opening round 68 and was being chased by five scores of 69. Angelica Moresco of Alabama followed up her opening round 69 with a 70 and took the second-round lead into Sunday. However, both Moresco and Piddon shot over par on the final round and could not keep pace with the sizzling hot Priscilla Schmid from Indiana. Schmid's final round 68 included five birdies and a bogey to finish the tournament at 7 under par and two strokes ahead of Ana Peleaz of South Carolina.

Thank you to the numerous volunteers that each and every year make this event possible. Also, a big round of applause to our Tournament Co-Chairs Jack Barto and Jeff Mays along with the Tournament Committee members for a job well done in orchestrating another wonderful event. Thank you to all that were able to come out and be a part of one of the country's premier Women's Collegiate events!
